Riyan Malhan, a 16-year-old badminton player from Dubai who studies at Dubai Gem Private School, has made history by winning gold in the boys' singles badminton event at the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal — the first Youth Olympic gold ever won by a UAE athlete in any sport.

In Thursday's final, Malhan defeated France's Mady Sow in straight sets, 21-17, 21-18, to claim the title. The win capped months of punishing preparation: daily training sessions of six to seven hours that began at 4:30am. His mother, Vasudha, gave up her teaching career to travel with him to tournaments around the world, and he received mentorship from Danish badminton star Anders Antonsen along the way.

Speaking afterwards, Malhan said hearing the UAE national anthem play as he stood on the podium was "really special," and described the UAE as feeling like his first home, despite his family's roots elsewhere.

The victory landed during Diwali celebrations across the UAE, adding extra resonance for Malhan and the country's large Indian community, many of whom followed his progress in Dakar closely. UAE sports officials have hailed the result as a landmark moment, one they hope will inspire a new generation of young athletes to pursue individual sports at the international level, badminton included, in a country better known on the global sporting stage for football and motorsport.

Malhan now returns home to Dubai as the country's youngest Olympic-level champion.
